Home Improvement and Structural Alterations (HISA)
The VA Home Improvement and Structural Alterations grant provides medically necessary improvements and structural alterations to Veterans/Servicemembers’ primary residence for the following purposes:

Grant Amounts:
The benefit can cover a lifetime amount of up to $6800 for:
A lifetime benefit of up to $2,000 may be available for Veterans who have a non-service connected condition.
Application Process:
Improvements can be made to:
- Entrance/exit
- Lavatory/sanitary facilities (bathroom, shower…)
- Kitchen or/and bathroom sinks/counters (lower)
- Entrance paths or driveways for direct entrance
- Improve plumbing or electrical systems due to medical equipment
Grant Amounts:
The benefit can cover a lifetime amount of up to $6800 for:
- Veterans who have a service-connected condition
- Veterans who have a non-service-connected condition rated 50% or more service connected.
A lifetime benefit of up to $2,000 may be available for Veterans who have a non-service connected condition.
Application Process:
- Prescription written or approved by a VA physician that includes:
- Beneficiaries name, address, number
- Identify the improvement or structural alteration
- Diagnosis and medical justification for the alterations
- Completed and signed VA Form 10-0103 Veteran’s Application for Assistance
- For Renters – a notarized statement from the owner approving the alterations
- Itemized estimate of costs (labor, material, permit…)
- Color photograph of unimproved area
